The Footwear
and Leather Goods
Cluster

The Portuguese Footwear and Leather Goods Cluster comprises more than 1 900 companies responsible for over 40 thousand jobs. As a whole, they export more than 95% of their production to 172 countries in the five continents, the equivalent of 2 300 million euros per year.

This Cluster has the ambition to become the “international benchmark and strengthen its exports, by virtuously combining sophistication and creativity with productive efficiency, based on the technological development and management of the international value chain, thus ensuring a national production basis, sustainable, and highly competitive”.

With this in mind, the sector and its companies, are commited to work and contribute to the goals set by the United Nations.

Inspire and support

Greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions continue to increase worldwide, leading to global warming of the planet. Rising temperatures result in social, environmental, and economic impacts, from migrations, to heat waves and fires, to massive flooding.

In 2016, in Paris, the United Nations Organization established the ambitious goal of curbing the growth of the planet’s average temperature to 1.5 °C above pre-industrial levels. To achieve this, the 196 subscribing countries committed to immediate, rapid, and large-scale reductions in greenhouse gas emissions, which requires halving these emissions in 2030 and achieving complete neutrality in 2050.

The Portuguese footwear cluster must also intensify its efforts to comply with the Paris Agreement. For this, it will strive to move away from a linear pattern of increasing consumption of the planet’s resources and the use of non-renewable materials towards a circular system which embraces the bioeconomy, reduces the use of fossil resources and favours the digitalization of the value chain, thus sustainably reducing GHG emissions and climate change.

The goal of the portuguese shoes green pact is to inspire and support footwear companies and the entire value chain to prioritize a circular economy and reduce the environmental impact of the sector.

Action Plan

ctcp will support
the companies
undertaking the
green pact

1
Carrying out an initial diagnosis and defining specific objectives.
2
Defining an individual action plan, which, according to each company, will determine the actions to be carried out concerning matters such as eco-design, methods for selecting materials, waste reduction, the production and use of green energies, or the implementation of new business models that reduce the use of new materials or reuse materials from renewable or recycled sources.
3
Supporting the monitoring and implementation of the action plans.

GREEN PACT
STEPS

Overall, the following activities are planned to implement the Green Pact.

GREEN PACT
STEPS

WORKING FIELDS

Based on CTCP’s experience with the cluster’s companies several working fields, with high potential to contribute to the targets set, were identified.

Design

Product eco-design for durability, repairability, and circularity at the end of life. Product design to increase the usage of materials and the efficiency of production processes.

Materials & components

With lower environmental, carbon and water footprint, lightweight, durable, recycled, recyclable and/or certified.

Materials efficiency

Renewable bio-based/biological materials, reducing the use of fossil materials, using materials more efficiently, and reducing waste generated during production.

Business processes

Motivation and well-being of all employees, increased overall efficiency of production processes, traceability, digitalization, and certification (quality, environment, social responsibility).

Circular economy

Prevent waste, sorting, and reusing in “niche” collections, promoting recycling by establishing industrial symbioses. Increase circularity and recycling of production waste and end-of-life products.

Environmental aspects & chemical products

Comply with applicable company environmental legislation and eliminate or reduce critical chemicals above REACH and other regulations.

Green energy

Use low carbon energy, focus on renewable energy production (photovoltaic panels), procure 100% renewable electricity, and maximize energy efficiency.

Research & innovation

Develop materials, components, equipment, and digital processes with a smaller environmental footprint (impact).

Business models

Promote circular business models and collaboration across the entire value chain, from sourcing raw materials to retail.

Packaging

Reduce packaging weight and rethink packaging to promote reuse and recycling.

FOR A NET ZERO CARBON PLANET IN 2050

By subscribing to the Green Pact, Portuguese companies commit to work and contribute towards achieving the targets defined by the United Nations: halving the carbon emission by 2030 and achieving a net zero carbon planet by 2050.
APICCAPS and CTCP will support all participant companies by carrying out the initial diagnosis and defining the individual action plans, as well as through the global monitoring of all defined actions.
